BILL
to
Ensure that disinformation and deliberate attempts to subvert the democratic process at election time are not further enabled by social media networks.
BE IT ENACTED by the Queen’s most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—
- Controls on Social Media During Elections
(1) In part X, of the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums 2000 Act is amended as follows.
(2) insert a new heading after “Broadcasting during election period”, titled “Social Media Use During Elections”.
(3) Under the heading of “Social Media Use During Elections” insert –
“Within 24 hours of a general election or national referendum being called all Internet Service Providers and Mobile Telephony Companies shall bar all access to the following social networks and communication tools: Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp.”
